Q&A: How do I get emergency dispatch training?

Question by DJ: How do I get emergency dispatch training?
I want to improve my chances of working within a police department. When dropping off a resume for dispatcher positions, many places ask for emergency dispatch training and certifications. Does anybody know where to receive this training?

Best answer:

Answer by Caoedhen
You get the training by being a dispatcher… kind of a circular way of doing things, but that’s how it works.

Although dispatch is dispatch, every agency does it a little different. Your being trained by Agency A does not mean you can sit down at a console at Agency B and jump right in. That’s why it is so difficult to get any training outside of an agency. While you are doing the same basic job, the details will be different. You have to be trained on that agencies specific methods, and quite often on their specific hardware/software too.

Question by ed bui: How exactly stressful is it being an emergency physician?
One of my main goals after high school is to go to a medical school and take an additional four years of residency to become an emergency physician. I like this job because it involves leadership, teamwork, and challenges to overcome.

I have heard many rumors that this job is extremely stressful and will take a majority of time away from friends and relatives. Is this true?

Best answer:

Answer by Bohoi
I think that probably is true. It takes a really special person to do that job. But if you think you can do it we can always use more good doctors.

Q&A: What is it like to major in emergency medicine?

Question by : What is it like to major in emergency medicine?
I am a high school student currently wanting to peruse a career in Emergency Medicine. I was wondering if anyone is currently working in Emergency Medicine and can give me some tips on it, and what to expect on the job. Thanks!

Answer by Pangolin
You don’t major in any medical specialty. Majoring is for undergraduate work, and you can major in anything and still go to medical school.

In med school, we all learn the same stuff. Following med school graduation, we do a residency in our chosen specialty, and that is where you may start learning emergency medicine.

That was my second choice for a specialty, but there was too much non-emergent stuff for my liking. I ended up in anesthesia, so all of my patients require critical care. Most don’t until I get to them, of course.

Good luck with your studies, and I hope you fulfill that dream!

How do these jobs use deductive reasoning?

Question by : How do these jobs use deductive reasoning?
How exactly do these specialists use deductive reasoning? I’m in allied health and today we were talking about deductive reasoning and I was very confused on how it works for these occupations. (Beside each job i typed what it is)

Surgeons – Treat diseases, injuries, and deformities by invasive methods, such as manual manipulation or by using instruments and appliances.

Dentists – Diagnose and treat diseases, injuries, and malformations of teeth and gums and related oral structures. May treat diseases of nerve, pulp, and other dental tissues affecting vitality of teeth.

Physicists – Conduct research into the phases of physical phenomena, develop theories and laws on the basis of observation and experiments, and devise methods to apply laws and theories to industry and other fields.

Epidemiologists – Investigate and describe the determinants and distribution of disease, disability, and other health outcomes and develop the means for prevention and control.

Psychiatrists – Diagnose, treat, and help prevent disorders of the mind.

Pharmacists – Compound and dispense medications following prescriptions issued by physicians, dentists, or other authorized medical practitioners.

Pathologists – analyzes the patient’s blood and look for abnormalities. If surgery is necessary, he or she will also examine tissue samples. The pathologists tests and conclusions will help the medical team identify the cause of the patient’s pain.

Radiologist – a physician who has specialized training in obtaining and interpreting medical images, which makes him or her an imaging expert. These images are obtained by using x-rays (radio graphs, CT, fluoroscope), or radioactive substances (nuclear medicine), others by means of sound waves (ultrasound) or the body’s natural magnetism (MRI).

Paramedic – a medical professional, usually working as part of the emergency medical services provision in a given area. Their primary role is to provide pre hospital advanced medical and trauma care, followed, where appropriate, by transfer to definitive care.

I trust you have heard of Sherlock Holmes, the world’s greatest detective. He used deductive reasoning to solve crimes. His deductive reasoning was based on clues and observations. All of the above do the same thing, They look for symptoms (clues), outward appearances (observations) to deduce and diagnose ills/ diseases and/ or treat patients.

How do you become a EMT/ Paramedic? ?

emergency medicine expert
by US Army Africa

Question by DragonBackpack: How do you become a EMT/ Paramedic? ?
I have heard that this is one of the best Pre-med Jobs. I am a Pre-Med Biology major and I am looking for a good job that i will enjoy and will help me to prepare for medical school and becoming a doctor someday. I am interested in Emergency medicine so i really want to get some experience to see if i like it or not. Can anyone give me the details on how this works? What kind of schooling does it require? When is the schooling available? is it possible to be a part time EMT? I have looked into it, and i have read about the different levels so I’m just wondering how do you get started….who do you call…where do you go etc… any personal experience/ expert advice would be much appreciated.

Answer by xtcfuntimes
Check out the website www.nremt.org. There are different levels of EMT, the one you would probably be starting with is EMT-B. It requires a 6 week course of both book learning and practical techniques. Compared to college courses, its a relatively easy course and would definitely be a good first step to get a taste of emergency medicine. You have to take the courses first, then you will be allowed to take the National Registry exam, which is also not too difficult of a test compared with college science tests. To get a job actually working as an EMT, you would have to get in touch with your local hospitals or the ambulance agencies that service them. I know of people working part time as EMTs, so that is definitely a possiblity.

To go on to be a paramedic requires quite a bit more education, which would be a full-time job and is kind of a separate path from going to college to become a doctor, unless you intend to work towards being a paramedic, do that for a few years, and eventually go on to be a doctor. But since you said you’re already in college, this may not be the route for you.
